Important: The ranges below are provisional training benchmarks and should not yet be interpreted as scientific or population norms. They can be replaced or refined as the PlayScan dataset grows.

Reaction time represents how quickly a player responds after relevant visual information appears during the test.
Lower reaction times generally indicate faster responses, but reaction speed should not be evaluated in isolation.
A very fast incorrect response is not necessarily better than a slightly slower correct response. That is why PlayScan also considers accuracy and overall performance.
Football Scan Width Benchmark
Scanning width describes how far a player explores their surroundings during a scanning movement.
Narrow
Under 30°
Medium
30–60°
Wide
Over 60°
A wider scan may allow a player to collect information from a larger area.
But wider is not automatically better. The objective of football scanning is not to turn your head as far as possible.
The objective is to gather useful information quickly enough to influence your next action. A short scan at exactly the right moment can be more valuable than a large scan that happens too late.

These levels provide an easy way to follow your progress across sessions.
However, the most important comparison is often not:
How do I compare with another player?
Am I improving compared with my previous sessions?
A player who improves from 45 to 65 has made meaningful progress even if another player currently scores 80.
What Does PlayScan Measure?
Football scanning performance is more complex than one reaction-time number.
PlayScan is designed around several components of visual and cognitive performance.
Reaction Speed
Reaction speed measures how quickly you respond when relevant information appears.
In football, faster recognition can help when:
- Pressure arrives
- Space opens
- A teammate changes direction
- A defender steps forward
- A passing lane appears
- Possession changes unexpectedly
But reaction speed becomes more useful when combined with accurate recognition.
Scan Width
Scan width represents the approximate range covered during a scanning action.
Football players often need to collect information from areas outside their immediate forward view.
- An opponent approaching from behind
- A teammate in space
- A runner on the opposite side
- A passing lane
- Free space for the first touch
Repeated training can help players become more comfortable checking a wider area around them.
Accuracy
Accuracy measures whether the player responds correctly to the information presented.
This matters because football is not simply a speed contest.
Imagine two players.
Player A
Reaction time: 220 ms
Accuracy: 68%
Player B
Reaction time: 270 ms
Accuracy: 94%
Player A reacts faster, but Player B processes the information more reliably.
The goal is therefore to combine: Speed + accuracy + awareness.
Consistency
One excellent reaction does not tell the whole story.
Football requires players to repeatedly process information throughout an entire match.
A player who repeatedly produces controlled, accurate responses may have a stronger training profile than someone whose results vary dramatically from attempt to attempt.
What Is a Good Reaction Time for a Football Player?
There is no universal reaction-time number that defines a good football player.
Different reaction tests measure different things.
A test with one predictable visual signal is much easier than a test where the player must:
- Identify the signal.
- Choose between multiple options.
- Make the correct response.
This difference is important.
Simple Reaction Time vs Choice Reaction Time
Simple Reaction Time
The player knows exactly what response will be required.
Light appears → tap the screen.
There is almost no decision-making involved.
Choice Reaction Time
The player must recognize the information before selecting a response.
Left signal → respond left
Right signal → respond right
Different cue → different action
Now the player must process information before reacting.
Football contains far more choice-based reactions than simple reactions. A player rarely knows exactly what an opponent will do before the action begins.
Football Reaction Time Is More Than Reflexes
A player who appears to react quickly may actually be doing something more sophisticated.
- Scanned earlier
- Recognized the situation
- Anticipated the next action
- Positioned themselves better
- Reduced the number of possible decisions
Consider two midfielders.
Player A
Receives the ball.
Then looks for pressure.
Then searches for a teammate.
Then chooses the pass.
Player B
Scans before receiving.
Already knows where the pressure is.
Already sees the teammate.
Receives. Passes.
Player B appears faster. But the advantage started before the ball arrived.
This is why PlayScan connects reaction speed with scanning and awareness.
What Is a Good Scan Width in Football?
There is no single ideal scanning angle for every football situation.
The useful scanning range depends on:
- Position
- Direction of play
- Location of opponents
- Location of teammates
- Available space
- Where the ball is
- How much time the player has
A midfielder receiving between opponents may need information from both sides and behind.
A winger near the touchline may need a very different scan. A defender may need to alternate attention between the ball and runners behind the defensive line.
The goal is therefore not simply: Scan wider.
Scan the information that matters before you need it.
Scan Width vs Scan Frequency
Width is only one component of good scanning. Frequency also matters.
Player A
Makes one very wide scan every ten seconds.
Player B
Makes several controlled scans while the situation develops.
Player B may maintain a more current picture of the game.
Football situations change constantly. Information becomes outdated quickly. That means scanning needs to happen repeatedly.
Scan Timing May Matter More Than Scan Count
Counting scans can be useful, but not every scan has equal value.
Too early
The player scans, but the situation changes before the pass arrives.
Too late
The player receives before gathering enough information.
Well timed
The player scans shortly before receiving, updates the picture while the ball travels and acts quickly after the first touch.
This is why football scanning performance should eventually consider more than raw scan numbers.
Track Improvement Across PlayScan Sessions
One of the most useful ways to use PlayScan benchmarks is to compare yourself with yourself.
Record a baseline. Train consistently. Then repeat the test under similar conditions.

This example illustrates something important: improvement does not have to happen in only one metric.

- More accurate
- More consistent
- More comfortable scanning
- Better at processing multiple signals
Together, those changes can produce a stronger overall performance.
Measure Relative Improvement
Absolute scores are useful. Percentage improvement can be even more useful when tracking an individual player.
400 ms → 320 ms reduces response time by 80 milliseconds.
Players can also track changes in accuracy, scan width, PlayScan Score, correct responses and performance consistency.
This makes progress visible even when two players begin at very different levels.
Beginner Football Scanning Benchmarks
A player who is new to scanning training may initially:
- Scan inconsistently
- Turn only a small amount
- React late to signals
- Lose accuracy when trying to respond faster
- Focus too heavily on one visual area
That is normal during skill development.
A good progression is: See the cue → respond correctly → become consistent → increase speed.
Developing Player Benchmarks
As players become more comfortable, they can increase the difficulty.
- Faster visual cues
- Wider scanning requirements
- More response options
- Less predictable sequences
- Movement during scanning
- Ball involvement
- Decision-making under time pressure
The challenge should increase gradually.
Speed without control is not the objective.
Advanced Football Scanning
Scanning + recognition + decision + movement.
Instead of simply responding to one signal, players may need to identify several pieces of information before choosing an action.
This begins to move training from basic reaction speed toward football-specific perception and decision-making.
Benchmarks by Football Position
Midfielders
Potentially useful metrics include:
- Scan frequency
- Left/right scan balance
- Reaction to pressure
- Wide awareness
- Decision speed
Midfielders often receive information from multiple directions and may benefit particularly from frequent scanning.
Forwards
- Reaction to changing space
- Recognition speed
- Peripheral awareness
- Quick directional responses
Attackers often operate in situations where opportunities disappear rapidly.
Defenders
- Wide visual awareness
- Reaction consistency
- Detection of movement
- Response to changing cues
Defenders often need to track both the ball and movement away from it.
Goalkeepers
- Visual reaction speed
- Accuracy
- Rapid directional responses
- Recognition of unpredictable changes
Eventually, position-specific PlayScan datasets could provide more meaningful comparisons than one benchmark for every football player.
Future PlayScan Benchmark Categories
As the anonymized dataset grows, PlayScan can expand these benchmarks to include factors such as:
- Age group
- Playing position
- Experience level
- Number of training sessions
- Reaction-time percentile
- Scan-width percentile
- Accuracy percentile
- Improvement after 5 sessions
- Improvement after 10 sessions
- Improvement after 20 sessions
For example:
Your reaction speed is faster than 72% of PlayScan players in your comparison group.
Your scan width improved by 18% over your last 10 sessions.
These types of benchmarks become increasingly useful as more comparable sessions are collected.
Why Percentiles Can Be Better Than Labels
Terms such as Bronze, Silver, Gold and Elite make scores easy to understand.
But once PlayScan has enough real-world data, percentile rankings can provide more context.
50th percentile
Your result is approximately around the middle of the comparison group.
75th percentile
Your result is stronger than approximately three quarters of the comparison group.
90th percentile
Your result is among the strongest results in that comparison group.
Percentiles should only be introduced when enough comparable data exists to make them meaningful.
How PlayScan Benchmarks Should Be Used
Benchmarks are useful for:
- Establishing a baseline
- Tracking improvement
- Setting training goals
- Identifying strengths
- Identifying areas to develop
- Comparing repeated sessions
They should not be used to decide whether someone is a good or bad football player.
Football performance is much broader than any scanning test. Technical skill, tactical understanding, physical ability, communication, creativity, positioning and match experience all matter.
PlayScan benchmarks measure specific elements of visual scanning and reaction performance. They do not measure complete football ability.
How to Get a More Reliable PlayScan Result
Use the same device — different devices can introduce differences in display and input behavior.
Use a similar setup — try to maintain the same phone position and training environment.
Avoid major distractions — concentration can affect results.
Complete several sessions — one result may be unusually high or low. Repeated sessions give a more useful picture.
Compare similar tests — do not directly compare two sessions if the difficulty or test format changed significantly.
Your Personal Benchmark Matters Most
Global averages are interesting. But the most actionable question is often:
Am I getting better?
Suppose your first PlayScan test shows:
- Reaction time: 410 ms
- Scan width: 32°
- PlayScan Score: 46
After several weeks:
- Reaction time: 315 ms
- Scan width: 49°
- PlayScan Score: 67
That personal improvement can be more useful than knowing whether another player scored 75.
Training is about progression.
